Sheldon and his colleagues proposed a system of classification of the human physique that comprised of three body types (also known as somatotypes), which he called ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph. In the 1940’s American scientist William H. What is Body Type?įrom Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man and even Galileo’s Square-Cube Law, to the medical classifications by Hippocrates, traditional Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda, the human physique has fascinated scientists for millennia. It can allow you to personalize diet and workouts to suit your specific needs, work with your body instead of against it, and achieve better results. Knowing your body type can be be helpful if you have been trying to achieve fitness, strength, or weight loss goals less successfully than you’d like to. Findings are discussed and recommendations are presented.Do you struggle to lose weight, or find it difficult to put on muscle no matter how much time you spend in the gym? The answer may lie in understanding your body type. After the bust line and center-front line were marked with colored threads on each sample, the experimental-group samples were compared visually with the control-group samples. In the experimental group, a total of twelve garments were obtained by applying three dart types to four types of circular knitted fabrics. As the control group, a total of three control samples were sewn by applying three types of darts on woven fabric. To achieve this aim, an experimental pattern of control group post-test was designed. Thus, the aim of this research is to reveal the effect of dart applications, which is regarded as compulsory in garment manufacture from woven fabrics, in circular knitted fabrics on static body-garment fit. Due to the nature of the loop structure, the circular knitted fabrics, which may take the form of the body easily and return to the original form after being removed and laid down for a while, is preferred in various clothing types because of the comfort properties such as softness, handle, stretch, moisture absorption, and warmth. Since the static and dynamic harmony of the clothes with the body is required for wearing comfort, dart-application method is developed for the woven fabric to ensure garment-body fit. Regarding ready-made clothing industry, cloth is a product obtained by preparing the selected textile materials by cutting with modified basic patterns according to the model and body characteristics of the user and bringing together by sewing the cut pieces of clothing through optimized workflow. Wrestlers are similar to sprinters and Tanner (1964) comments that the only way of distinguishing the two is by the state of their ears! For the throwing events the competitors are mainly mesomorphic endomorphs with very low ectomorphy scores and are similar in build to the weight lifters. In jumping events, especially the high jump, most of the competitors are very high in ectomorphy since they have relatively long legs and the high jumper uses his or her leg to lever themselves off the ground. As the track distances increase so the degree of ectomorphy also increases with marathon runners being comparatively thin with limited muscular development. Amongst elite athletes certain somatotypes dominate specific events 100m and 200m sprinters are heavily muscled mesomorphs, who, whilst they might be expected to have muscular thighs, also have muscular shoulders and arms. Endomorphy appears to be incompatible with (athletic) sporting prowess. The Oxford students represented the full range of all three body types whereas there was a complete absence of true endomorphs amongst the PE students (Tanner, 1964). James Tanner (1964) documented the somatotypes of male undergraduates at Oxford University in 1948-50 and compared them to the somatotypes of PE students at what was then still Loughborough Training College.
